The National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) is the first industrial symbiosis initiative in the world to be launched on a national scale and is at the forefront of industrial symbiosis thinking and practice globally.
NISP is a business led initiative. It facilitates links between industries from different sectors to create sustainable commercial opportunities and improve resource efficiency.
Since April 2005 the programme has helped to divert more than 78,000 tonnes of waste from landfill sites and created/attracted 25 new businesses. Nationally it has seen a reduction of 200,000 tonnes of CO2 with an estimated £27 million in cost savings to industry. More than 173 jobs have been safeguarded across the UK as a direct result of the programme and it has also seen £2,150,000 of private capital investment in reprocessing/recycling. This is on top of the achievements made in the last 18 months.
